When Penguins Fly

This really should have been my post for April 1st since this was from the first day of April in 2008 from the BBC.   Richard recognizes the iceberg from Planet Earth which I hope everyone has seen!

The documentary by Sir Richard Attenborough that is, I hope all of you are familiar with Earth and with the birds that might be in your own backyard like these, perhaps.

The little grey bird is a tufted titmouse and the bird with the bright orange beak is a female cardinal, or Mrs. C. as Richard calls her!
At this time of the year, the male cardinal (the very bright red one) will FEED the female...I saw this just yesterday and ran to get the camera, but alas, the male had flown away and it was another missed photo opportunity.  In North America, the cardinal is very common.  When my in-laws visited from England, they were very excited at their first sight of a cardinal.  It is such a beautiful bird, right in my backyard of Planet Earth!
UPDATE:   I didn't take this photo but I found one for you!...Beak to beak! Happy Spring to all!

    1. Dear Jenny,
For shame, you should know all funny things that the BBC has done! :-)
Glad you could have a chuckle today.

  2. We don't have either of those birds, and they are just wonderful. We are a bit too cold I think. The tufted titmouse has such a perplexed expression. :<)

    1. Dear Nan,
Oh, thanks for your comment! Don't you have the cardinal? It says on the map they are as far north as Maine, but maybe if you do have them they are not as plentiful as in other parts of the country.
Love that little expression on the tufty! (That is what we call him!)

  3. Aren't those birds wonderful?! We have both of them in our backyard as frequent visitors. And the bluebirds might be moving into our birdhouse... How exciting!! Love, Silke

    1. Dear Silke,
We love our birds! And bluebirds in your birdhouse. that is wonderful, sounds like a blessing of birdblues, to me. Will we see them in a painting?
      Love to you,
      Kay

  4. It's hard to imagine that folks don't have cardinals in other parts of the world. We have so many here. My cardinals, especially Harry Winston, make me so very happy! I'll try not to take them for granted. I don't think I do. Love your photos and keep meaning to put out a little bird bath like yours....the titmouse is too, too, too, too cute!!!

  5. Hello Kay, Mr. & Mrs. C are very busy in my back yard also. The look on the tufted titmouse is precious.. I know the feeling of missed photo ops, but I guess we can't control the nature...

    1. Hey!
I am glad that you enjoy the birds too. And now, I found a photo on the internet of the male feeding the female, beak to beak!

    1. Dear Jane,
We love both the male and the female Cardinals. Their beak is such a bright orange, but when they are babies or juveniles, the beak is more of a dull brown color! Amazing how much it changes...(and of course, the male takes a while to get to that bright, bright red.)
      We love our birds!

  7. We don't have the titmouse, but we do have the bearded tit, which is equally cute.

    1. Oh yes, and I love the birds in England too! The English robin and the bluetit are two of my favorites to see at the bird feeder there.

    1. Thanks, but that praise goes to Richard, of course.
(The day that I ran for the camera, my birds flew...these photos were taken a few days earlier.)
I promise I can do some things really well...I've not discovered them yet, but one day, I WILL.

  10. Well, i'm afraid i'm not very good at identifying birds. Little Girl and her friends are, and they are teaching me some.

We do have cardinals, but i don't believe i've seen the titmouse around here.

    That video is such fun.

    Happy Spring to you.

    1. Dear Mimi,
We love our birds. If you put out water for them, you will have birds, I promise you will.
Then, get yourself a bird book and identify all you see and you will fall in love with them too!
      Love,
      Kay

  11. I loved the video! How funny...and cute. We have cardinals year round here; they are such lovely birds. I hope to capture some images of them this year. They are difficult to photograph as they scare easily. Those are such lovely photos of the birds taking a bath. I have never seen a tufted titmouse. What a sweet-looking bird.

    1. Martha,
You have such a lovely garden, I bet your birds just love it there. Our bird bath is just the plastic bottom of a flowerpot, that is it...and it gives a million dollars worth of pleasure!

  12. I don't know why but I'm not fascinated with birds. But I like watching them "jump jump" when they're walking. Actually I wanna share my experiences with pigeons. For some reason, they love hanging out outside our window and I could hear them make some "croo croo" sound. :))

    1. The more you observe them, you more you will like them, I think. Lots of people here are afraid of them, because of the movie,
The Birds by Hitchcock. No, forget I said that, if you watch that movie, you won't like birds!
